Staying active after 75: what actually helps

Balance, strength and friendship — the three things our trainers focus on, and why.

You don't need a gym membership to stay strong in your late seventies and beyond. You need consistency, a little challenge and ideally some company.

Balance first

Simple exercises like heel-to-toe walking and standing on one leg near a counter reduce fall risk. Tai chi has some of the strongest evidence of any activity.

Keep the legs strong

Sit-to-stand practice from a sturdy chair builds the muscles you need for stairs, getting out of the car and getting up after a fall.

Make it social

People stick with exercise they enjoy with others. Group classes double as friendship clubs — and that's half the benefit.
