8 gentle signs your parent may need help at home

Small changes in the fridge, the mail pile or the car can tell you more than a phone call.

Most families notice the need for help gradually, often during a holiday visit. The signs are rarely dramatic — they're small shifts in routine that add up.

Look at the kitchen

Expired food, an empty fridge or the same meal every day can signal difficulty shopping or cooking. Unexplained weight loss is worth a conversation with their doctor.

Check the mail and bills

Piles of unopened mail, late notices or duplicate payments may point to memory or vision changes.

Notice how they move

Holding onto furniture, new bruises or avoiding the stairs are early fall-risk signs. A few hours of help a week can make a big difference.

Start the conversation kindly

Lead with what they want to keep doing, not what they can't do. Framing help as a way to stay independent at home usually lands better than talk of safety.
